Algeria – Work on the project of natural gas pipeline from Lagos (Nigeria) in Algiers will be initiated upon completion of necessary studies on along the route of this mega project, said Friday in Oran, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Youcef Yousfi.

“The TSGP (Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline) is an important project for Algeria as well as Nigeria and Niger, but whose implementation requires extensive studies,” said Mr. Yousfi during a press briefingsidelines of a visit to the main facilities of the industrial zone of Arzew to Oran.

“Currently, Sonatrach is working closely with his Nigerian counterpart (NNPC) to monitor this important regional project which Algeria is a very committed,” he added, ensuring that construction works will be initiated once the necessary studies completed.

Mr. Yousfi joined Minister of Petroleum of Angola, Jose Botelho de Vasconcelos, during the visit organized within the framework of the fourth session of the Joint Cooperation Committee between Algeria and Angola held Thursday in Algiers sanctioned the signing of four agreements the fields of higher education and scientific research, youth and sports, culture and communication.

The TSGP should bring gas to European markets from southern Nigeria through Niger and Algeria and the Mediterranean has a length of about 4300 km.

It should supply the European market at 20 to 30 billion m3 per year by 2015.

The minister, also reiterated that the proposed new city of Hassi Messaoud will be “well and truly done.” He has, in the same direction, expressed the willingness of governments to supply all the future new town of electricity produced from renewable sources.

The proposed new city of Hassi Messaoud to house some 80,000 residents is currently under study offers commercial and technical standards for component development and planning.

For this purpose, 11 domestic and foreign bidders are vying to win this market. APS
